Economic Growth Map

Growth - or Not

Carthographer: Philippe Rekacewicz, Emmanuelle Bournay, UNEP/GRID-Arendal

Per capita gross domestic product (GDP) average annual growth, 1990-2003.

This map shows the average annual percentage growth rate of GDP per capita at market prices based on constant local currency. GDP is the sum of gross value added by all resident producers in the economy plus any product taxes and minus any subsidies not included in the value of the products.

Only a quick glance on this map make you realize that Asia is growing, the US and Europe shows a steady growth, South America is a mix and Africa covers the whole range of economies. This was in 2003. Today we know that Asia is increasingly growing with China as a remarkable representative.

The big question now is whether this map will change dramatically as a consequence of the current economic crisis in America. Will it spread to the rest of the world or will we be able to constrain it and solve the problems in the US and European economies?
